TWENTY NEW YORK AREA WOMEN SAILED TO CUBA DELIVERING A MESSAGE OF FRIENDSHIP AND PEACE TO THE PEOPLE OF CUBA

New York, NY, November 22, 2016 – Twenty women from the New York City tri-state area who captained and crewed a flotilla to Cuba have returned from the extraordinary journey. The diverse group, some who had never sailed long distances before, believe they contributed to the growing friendship between the people of Cuba and the US and built the beginning of a solid relationship between their sailing communities.

The flotilla, organized by New York City-based sailing club Sailors NYC, comprised of three sailboats and departed from Key West, Florida to Cuba. The vessels sailed three legs of 95 nautical miles each from Key West to Varadero, Cuba (about 60 land miles east of Havana) from Varadero to Marina Hemingway and then back to Key West on Saturday, November 12.

The sailors attended a dinner party that was held at the Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba, hosted by Commodore José Miguel Díaz Escrich. Sailors NYC and HIYC exchanged burgees -- club flags -- and an appreciation award was presented by Sailors NYC to the HIYC club members. The two clubs signed a friendship agreement stating their reciprocal commitment to work together to strengthen the friendly and collaborative relations between both institutions and to carry out actions that will cultivate collaboration between the nautical communities of Cuba and United States.

During their stay in Cuba the women had the opportunity to have personal encounters with locals who were very welcoming and hospitable.

Heather Peet, one of the participants, was highly impressed with the high level of English proficiency of the Cubans. “They had many questions and were very curious about our lives in America, our hobbies, families and which candidate we supported in the elections. A few even invited us over to their homes for a traditional lunch which was probably one of the highlights of the trip for me.”

The women initiated a donation drive for the Cubans who were affected by Hurricane Matthew in October. Donations included over-the-counter medicine, clothing and office supplies, and were delivered with the assistance of the Beth Shalom Temple of Havana to eastern Cuba. Other donations were delivered by the women themselves to local schools and families they met during their tours.

Captain Nitzan Levy, founder of Sailors NYC and an intrepid sailor herself, organized the flotilla. “As soon as the sea

gates to Cuba opened, I knew I must sail there. It was an extremely empowering experience for me and all the women. The Cubans were very surprised to meet so many women sailors and, according to them, our story made it to the Cuban news!”

The Cuba flotilla was Sailors NYC’s fourth flotilla to the Caribbean. “People who sign up for our sailing flotillas are sailors and non-sailors who share the passion for exploring destinations in a unique way. People of different ages, backgrounds and cultures come together and meet people who become their friends for years after. Flotillas create a special bond," said Captain Levy.

Sailors NYC will hold a second flotilla to Cuba this spring on March 30. Other flotillas in 2017 include the British Virgin Islands on February 18 and Martinique and St. Lucia on February 26.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TWENTY NEW YORK WOMEN TO SAIL TO CUBA TO DELIVER AID TO
AREAS HIT BY HURRICANE MATTHEW

New York, NY, October 17, 2016 – New York City-based sailing club Sailors NYC has organized a flotilla that will deliver donations to those in Cuba affected by Hurricane Matthew. The flotilla will be captained and crewed by 20 women from the New York metropolitan area.

The flotilla comprises of three sailboats, two monohulls and one catamaran, and will depart from Key West, Florida to Cuba on November 5, 2016.

Captain Nitzan Levy, founder of Sailors NYC and an intrepid sailor herself, is the organizer of the flotilla. “As soon as the sea gates to Cuba opened, I knew I must sail there. It's empowering that a group of women have come together to sail to Cuba and assist those affected by Matthew."

Although originally not intended to be a women only flotilla, the Cuba flotilla attracted 20 women from New York, all eager for the opportunity to explore the island that has been off limits to American tourism until recently. “When I saw that the flotilla was attracting women, I decided to make it a women-only flotilla and hired two female captains to join the trip. I'm inspired by the spirit of these women and I can’t wait to share this unique journey with them,” said Levy.

The idea to run a special donation drive for the Cubans who were affected by Hurricane Matthew earlier this month came from the women themselves. After learning about the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Matthew in the Eastern part of Cuba, the women started collecting clothes and basic essential goods to deliver to Cuba. Sailors NYC contacted Father Josh Baker from the St. Mary Star of the Sea church in Key West who is assisting the coordination of transporting the donations collected to Cuba.

To organize the trip, Captain Levy contacted Harmony Yacht Vacations, a Key West, Florida travel agency that was one of the first companies to offer boat charters from Key West to Cuba. Levy and agency owners Margie and Brad Matheson created an itinerary that combines sailing, diving and snorkeling and land excursions. Harmony Yacht Vacations’s flotilla from Key West to Cuba.

In Cuba, participants will stay in Marina Gaviota in Varadero and in Marina Hemingway, located nine miles west of Havana. Commodore José Miguel Díaz Escrich, the port officer of the Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba, will host participants for a dinner party on Tuesday November 8, 2016.

The Cuba flotilla is Sailors NYC’s fourth flotilla to the Caribbean after sailing to St. Martin and St. Barths in 2014, the US and Spanish Virgin Islands in 2015 and the Grenadines in February 2016. “People who sign up for our sailing flotillas are both sailors and non-sailors who share the passion for exploring destinations in a unique way. People of different ages, backgrounds

and cultures come together to sail luxurious boats at affordable prices and they meet people who become their friends for years after. Flotillas create a special bond," said Captain Levy.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAILORS NYC AND THE PINK BOAT REGATTA ANNOUNCE THE FIRST-EVER REGATTA IN NEW YORK CITY TO BENEFIT BREAST CANCER RESEARCH

-- Kick-off Event on October 24 at Pier 25 --

New York, NY, October 16, 2015 – Sailing club Sailors NYC, in conjunction with the Pink Boat Regatta, will hold New York City’s first sailing regatta to support breast cancer research and awareness. The regatta, benefiting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, will be held on the Hudson River in September of 2016 for members of the sailing community who are committed to eradicating breast cancer.

A kick-off event to provide information for sailors, boat owners and volunteers will be held on Saturday, October 24 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on board the historic steamship Lilac, docked on the north side of Pier 25 in Tribeca. A percentage of Hands-On sailing lesson fees on October 24 and 25 will be donated to BCRF.

The New York-based Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s mission is to prevent and cure breast cancer by advancing the most promising research worldwide. Since its founding by Evelyn Lauder in 1993, the organization has provided scientists working on promising research the funds needed for them to expedite their work. In 2015-2016, BCRF will award $48.5 million in annual grants to over 240 scientists from top universities and medical institutions around the globe.

Captain Nitzan Levy, founder of Sailors NYC, is organizing the event to coalesce the sailing community and start an annual tradition in the New York Harbor of supporting breast cancer research. “There's no better way for us to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month than to kick-off a major event that will raise funds for breast cancer research. The NY Harbor will look fabulous in pink!” says Levy.

Ashely Bell, president of the Pink Boat Regatta, a Seattle-based organization that has led the effort to raise awareness for breast cancer through sailing, was enthusiastic about working together with Sailors NYC to produce NYC’s regatta, saying “A regatta in New York City is a perfect opportunity to grow this event throughout the nation. We look forward to a very successful event.”

The idea to organize a sailing regatta came after Levy learned about yet another acquaintance who was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. Luckily, the early diagnosis led to a fairly quick recovery. Captain Levy decided to spearhead an effort to raise awareness among the sailing community about the benefits of regular check-ups and maintaining a healthy lifestyle by organizing a regatta and supporting critical breast cancer research.
