FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Sailors NYC?

Sailors NYC is a sailors' club,. We create a warm and welcoming community for sailors at all levels to improve their skills and enjoy the camaraderie and companionship of other members. Most of our members do not own yachts and choose to become members in order to sail the club's vessels. Members are free to sail at their convenience and according to club policies and can reserve private sails, group and recreational sails from Manhattan and New Jersey quickly and easily online or by phone. Sailors NYC offers a variety of sailing vacations in spectacular settings throughout the world, and classes, a Meetup group and other social events are held for members and their guests year-round.

What kind of certificate do I need to take a boat out in the New York Harbor?

U.S. law and insurance companies do not require any certification or license to operate a small vessel (up to 100 tons) for recreational (non-commercial) use. In order to make sure that our yachts are being used safely and to meet Sailors NYC's insurance requirements, experienced sailors who wish to take a boat out on thier own must take a three hour skill-check session with one of our USCG licensed captains before taking their first sail. We want to make sure you know the "rules of the road" and sailing basics including: maneuvering, navigation and anchoring (mooring at Pier 25, Manhattan or docking at Liberty Landing Marina, Jersey City), among other skills so they have safe and smooth outings every time!

Can I skipper a boat if I have an international sailing certificate?

We welcome aboard sailors with international sailing certificates. All Sailors NYC Skipper Members are required to obtain a New York State Safe Boating Certificate. To obtain this certificate members take an eight hour classroom course that is offered by Sailors NYC. To learn more about Skipper Members' privileges click here.
