DEPART. SAIL. RETURN.
Naturally, the next step after mastering the theory would be to gain hands-on experience & practice. Repetition is a mother of all learning. There are key steps you have to do every time you go sailing - to name a few: prepare the boat for departure, consider the conditions (weather, current, crew skill level etc.) and make the right plan for casting off, getting underway, hoisting sails, sailing, bringing sails down and returning to the slip. While the basic steps are the same, changes in conditions make your experience different from time to time, giving you the opportunity to learn different things every time. Sailors NYC's Crew to Skipper Program offers the opportunity to learn and exercise practical skills in a mixed skill-level environment - allowing each participant to obtain knowledge in a wide perspective manner. Sailors NYC also offers a 9-lesson package of practice lesson which will help you achieve your goal.
Don't forget to log your time on the water!
SO YOU THINK YOU CAN SAIL? IT'S SHOWTIME!
As the skipper of the vessel - you are the person in charge. Many times you will be the only knowledgeable and experienced sailor aboard, which increases your responsibility to instruct your crew and operate the vessel even more. After acquiring some serious experience you will get to a point where you feel more confident and fluent. Now it's time for you to demonstrate those skills to a certified NauticEd instructor, who would assess your skill level. The practical competency assessment rubrics are covering knowledge and skills pertaining to: rules of the road, navigation, weather, pilotage, safety, boat systems, crew briefing and, slip departures and returns, maneuvering under sail, anchoring, mooring, life aboard, knots and distress situations. In the event the assessor recommends to take more lessons or gain more experience, you will be required to demonstrate those skills again before granting you with a certification.
